Real Cartagena: A Tour of Mercado de Bazurto

Just 20 minutes outside of downtown Cartagena's "Old City" lies a well-hidden but must-see spot: Bazurto Market. This energetic, colorful, and unique market feels less touristy than El Centro, but that's the point! And folks hard at work selling their merchandise are always happy to see new faces pass by. Here you can buy a big bag of passion fruit, red snapper, a bowl of fried rice with local crab, and pretty much anything else your heart desires. Anthony Bourdain came and filmed here. He was impressed - and you will be, too.

The tour is usually around 3 hours in total, unless we experience unpredictable weather, significant traffic delays, or other unforeseen circumstances. This happens very rarely if ever.

This 3-hour tour includes:

What's Included: Private vehicle, juice, fruits and food samples, water

What's extra: Fruits and snacks to go, souvenirs, and personal purchases not included in tour

Itinerary:

  • Pick up from the meeting point (Lobby of your hotel, seaport, and airport)
  • Drive to Mercado de Bazurto
  • Walk through the market, check out the fish and seafood area
  • Check out the handcrafts and artisan parts of the market, fresh Colombian fruit with time to taste afterwards
  • Plenty of time for walking and talking, learning about our culture and our famous music from the coast
  • And we'll end the tour with samples of Cartagena's most typical meals (coconut rice, plantains with local syrup, rice with local crab)

Highly recommended...

Brayan is very good at his job. He is passionate and knowledgeable about Cartagena, he is patient with his explanations and he is energetic. So get ready to have your eyes opened and see things differently after a couple of hours in his company."

— Paul M.

Brayan made Cartagena magic for us!

“This young man made our once in a life time visit to Cartagena - pure magic! Brayan went out of his way to make our day special - we ate lunch at a local restaurant, drank beer at the corner store and just had a blast. This young man is going places and don't waste time doing a large group tour - get Brayan and get the best!"

— Jane C.

Could not have been a better guide.

“Brayan met me at the airport with a driver and delivered me to my hotel. Along the way he talked about the history of the city. Very well informed and his English is very, very good. Brayan was a terrific guide, always trying to please. We accidentally met him a few days later when he had a cruise ship group going through the walled city and it was like meeting an old friend.”

— Scott S.

Beach Horseback Riding Excursion

This is a great outing for both first time visitors to Cartagena and returning travelers. This unique opportunity offers travelers a chance to ride a "Criollo" horse around town and other areas within the region. Enjoy two full hours of feeling the wind right on the beach of La Boquilla (a historical fishing zone), Manzanillo, and Playa de Oro with a stunning view of the eastern side of Cartagena.

Walking and Talking: Rum and Chocolate Tasting Tour

When Cartagena was a Spanish colony, its inhabitants had to hide their local treasures, riches, and delicacies from being ransacked by pirates and their own colonizers. Now, Colombia can celebrate its treasures, like its world-famous rum and chocolate.

The best way to learn about rum and the coastal production of sugar is to pair it with another of Colombia's famous exports: chocolate, or, "cacao. " On this tour, our guests get a chance to learn about the production of Colombian rum and chocolate as they should be tasted: together and with friends. We'll be tasting some of the best samples this country has to offer.

Palenque Day Trip: An introduction to Afro-Colombian culture

Cartagena has long been one of Colombia's most important ports. For over 200 years, it was also a frequent point of entry for the slave trade. But now, when we talk about Palenque, we are proud to describe how it became the first free town of The Americas and liberated itself from Spanish rule. In 2005, Palenque became a UNESCO world heritage site and was recognized as a "masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity. "

On this half-day tour, our group will ride out to Palenque in private vehicles, equipped with AC, and spend our time exploring the cultural highlights of Palenque - from music and language, to religion and medicine.
